Curriculum Overview
Most of you will have already completed the first Literacy unit in Month 2. This unit is a continuation from where that first unit left off. You revealed ten consonants in Month 2; in this unit, you will reveal the final eleven consonants of the alphabet. The plans will cover 20 days of lessons with the letters introduced over the first 15 days and the final week of lessons an optional project to give you flexibility. You worked with approximately fifteen literacy games and activities to strengthen and create pathways in your child’s brain during the last Literacy unit; you will continue that work this month. It was suggested that you take ten minutes per day during Month 3 to focus on the Literacy games and activities to keep the practice of these important foundation skills going. If you did manage to do that, awesome. If you did not manage to do that, no worries, we’ll pick it right back up. You’ll continue to work with the familiar skill-building games that you used in Month 2 as well as build on them and present new games. Remember, the goal of Year 1 Literacy is to support your child to develop mastery of the Phonological Stage of reading. We are building knowledge about letters and sounds and how words and syllables work. You got this!
Parent Preparation
This month you will need ‘anchor words’ to use just the same as you used ‘anchor images’ in Month 2. It is best to make these ahead of time. You’ll use your model letters again this month too, so have those handy over the coming weeks. It can be helpful to pre-read the daily lesson plans so that you know what games are coming up and what stories you might tell. Whatever your practice for preparation, know that you’ll be working with verses, songs, rhyme collections, alliterative collections, and stories.
