Your child will discover the four math processes (+ - x /) through imaginative stories. The unique characters of each process will indicate the ‘behaviour’ of the symbol. These memorable stories will stay with your child and support a clear connection to number/amount transformation processes.

Curriculum Areas/Learning Outcomes
Language Arts: Concept: Stories and other texts can be shared through pictures and words.
Connection: Your child will be hearing stories every day and using those stories to build images related to central ideas.
Concept: Curiosity and wonder lead us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. Connection: As you child hears stories and connects letters to them, they will begin to see the world as full of math!
Math: Concept: Addition and subtraction with numbers to 10 can be modelled concretely, pictorially, and symbolically to develop computational fluency.
Connection: Your child will learn about the qualities of the four processes and build a picture of those processes with numbers up to 24.

Curriculum Overview
During this unit you will introduce the four processes of math + - x / as well as the =. This is an exciting moment! Your child will likely have a sense of these concepts, but you will take the time to bring them to your child’s awareness. You will bring the processes as characters since each process has a way of working with numbers. By using characters to support your child’s understanding you are building a living picture in their imagination that is digestible for them at this stage of their development. You are taking something abstract and transforming it to an imaginative picture that will stay with your child for always. You will deliver the curriculum concepts within the first 15 days of the unit. For the final 5 days of the unit, you will be invited to continue working with the math concepts or you can use these days to bring flexibility to your home learning schedule. Once you have completed the 15/20 days of this unit you can introduce the math workbook to your child. Math workbooks can be purchased from any bookstore and are country and grade specific. DW suggests your child continue to develop their foundational math skills every day for about 15 minutes in Year 1. Save major concepts for units that will bring them imaginatively. Math workbooks can only support practice, not understanding, therefore DW recommends bringing any new concepts through the units. For Year 1 we recommend you stick with: four processes worked horizontally with numbers to 24, simple shape identification, simple graphs, and numeracy (what is a number?).
Parent Preparation
This month you will need a numbers’ display in your learning space so that your child can see examples of how each number is written. It can help to have the images that go with each number as part of the display. You will also want to add the image for each of the four processes as you go through the unit. DW offers the following colours to use for each process: times=yellow, plus=green, minus=blue, divide=red. Having counting materials such as chestnuts, shells, gems, etc. is especially helpful. A bag/sack/basket of 20-30 counters is great. If you plan to complete the final project week/final 5 days of the unit you will need a thin round of wood about 6” – 10” in diameter (a stump could work too), some small nails, and some string.
