Curriculum Overview
You have completed two language arts focused units if you have been following along with the DW units over the months. This unit will build on skills from the first two units. This month your child will hear stories of kindness. Using these stories as a backdrop, your child will have opportunities to work on the DW literacy program inspired heavily by “The Roadmap to Literacy” by Langley and Militzer-Kopperl. You’ll be building capacities for the future including those for spelling, reading, written communication, oral communication, and complex expression. There will be many opportunities for reading, writing, and playing games as we build up your child’s skills and capacities for communication. The curriculum will be covered in the first 15 days of the unit; the final week, the Flex Week, will invite your child to complete a project. The Flex Week offers you the option to continue with the home learning routine of working through a morning lesson for the whole 20 days, or you can skip the final week completely. You might also decide to bring the project in to your afternoons over the 15 days or, do four-day weeks of the curriculum by spreading it out into 20 days. The Flex Week is meant to give you some flexibility and still trust that your child is covering curriculum. This month’s project is a Kindness Quilt. More details can be found in the lesson plans for Days 16-20.
