Grade 4 Unit 3 The Wonder of Fractions 1: Whole to Parts
This unit introduces children to the world of fractions in a deeply hands-on and imaginative way. Beginning with the idea of a whole and its parts, they learn how fractions describe equal pieces of a whole or a group. The learning unfolds through storytelling, activities, and practical explorations that make fractions meaningful and memorable.
They Will:
- Experience the idea of “the whole and the parts” through powerful imagery and activities (like breaking a vase into pieces) to feel what a fraction really means.
- Connect fractions to the natural world by observing patterns of the Earth and moon, and link these rhythms to cycles, wholeness, and parts.
- Use food, shapes and manipulatives to divide objects into equal parts and represent fractions visually.
- Add and subtract fractions with common denominators, first through cut-out models and then with number sentences.
- Explore fractions on number lines by walking and drawing fractional steps to deepen their number sense.
- Practice equivalent fractions, seeing how the same whole can be divided in different but equal ways.
- Begin connecting fractions to real-world sharing and fairness, preparing for more advanced work in Fractions 2.
Children will see fractions as more than just numbers—they are a way of understanding wholeness and division in life, nature, and relationships. This first step into fractions helps them feel the concept before moving into more complex operations.

The Wonder of Fractions 1
Learning Standards
Concept: Fractions and decimals are types of numbers that can represent quantities.
Connections: Your child is gaining an understanding of the concept of fractions through hands-on activities such as walking, counting, and cutting up food. They are making connections between fractions and decimals.
Language Arts
Concept: Language and text can be a source of creativity and joy.
Connection: The suggested book for this unit is The Kalevala, an epic Finnish Tale that your child can either read independently or hear as you read it to them.
Science
Concepts: The motions of Earth and the moon cause observable patterns that affect living and non-living systems. Earth’s annual movement causes local changes.
Connections: Your child is observing the seasonal changes and making connections to the position of the Earth. Your child is observing the patterns of the moon and discussing this effect on human and non-living systems.
Social Studies
Concept: Construct narratives that capture the attitudes, values, and worldviews commonly held by people at different times or places. Develop perspective.
Connection: The suggested book for this unit is The Kalevala, which tells the story of the relations—amicable at first but increasingly hostile—between the people of Kaleva and the northern tribe of Pohjola. Through reading and discussing this book, your child will recognize differing perspectives within the narrative.
