Curriculum Overview
Throughout this unit, your child will learn a wide variety of poetry styles through writing their own personal poems. This will strengthen their language arts skills, as they are going to be proofreading and editing their own writing each day. It will call on a review of literary devices, oral language strategies, writing processes, features of oral language, grammar and conventions.
This unit is an excellent time to encourage memorization of poetry. Choose some of your favourite poems to share with your child. Memorize them together and recite each morning. As your child writes their own poems, you can be including some of them in the morning opening verses.
The final week of the unit will be set aside for an independent project. This is optional. A list of suggestions is written into the guidelines for week 4.
