Curriculum Areas/Learning Outcomes
Math: Concept: Fractions and decimals are types of numbers that can represent quantities.
Connection: Your child is working with adding and subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators.
Concept: Development of computational fluency and multiplicative thinking requires analysis of patterns and relations in multiplication and division.
Connection: Your child will be working with vertical multiplication. They will first practice an expanded version that demonstrates the pattern.
Language Arts: Concept: Language and text can be a source of creativity and joy.
Connection: Your child will be reading classic literature that meets them developmentally.

Curriculum Overview
The second fraction unit will focus on finding common denominators and then adding and subtracting fractions. The purpose is for your child to have a good grasp of the concept, so that they understand what is actually happening when they are finding common denominators. The questions will remain simple, so the mathematical steps can be practiced with more ease. Depending on how much review took place in the last month’s unit, and how your child is feeling with the concepts learned in the first Fraction unit, there may need to be some review around factoring, finding the lowest common multiple and the greatest common factor. A refresher on prime and composite numbers will be helpful as well. Again, if your child hasn’t recently had a full review of the work learned in the first Fraction unit, then this will be important. You and your child can go through the learning portfolio, and review the concepts learned. We are building on them during this unit.
For the language arts portion of the unit, you can read to your child, or they can read independently. If you have not read, or finished, the Kalevala, this would be the unit to do so. If you completed this epic tale, then we suggest you get a copy of the epic Old English poem called Beowulf. Background info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf
You will need a version that is a children’s chapter book, written in simple prose. Example: https://www.amazon.com/Story-Beowulf-Dover-Childrens-Classics/dp/048645449
