Curriculum Overview
We will pick up from where we left off in the first unit on the Founding of Rome. The first unit highlighted the myths around the beginning of Rome, the way that the founders built their strength and conquered surrounding areas with such success, and the Roman inventions and architecture that were a visual sign of their strength and power. We looked at the Romans’ love of law and order, and the separation between the poor and the wealthy, the Plebeians and the Patricians. The content of the unit is inspired by Charles Kovacs’ book, Ancient Rome. This unit focuses on the tension between the slaves and the powerful, and the uprising with Spartacus as the leader. It will introduce Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar and their biographies. It will explore the role of Christianity during Roman rule. It highlights the immense power held by the Roman Empire, and the eventual weakening of the Empire and the downfall. The events leading to the fall of the Roman Empire will be explored. The unit will end with the power of various tribes spread throughout Europe.
