Curriculum Overview
This unit will take your child on a journey to explore the continent of Asia. The 5 themes of geography will be the framework for this exploration: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement and region. It is helpful to learn the five themes of geography in order to understand how people and places interact and connect in the world. With this information, your child can express specific locations in relation to other locations, describe the characteristics of their environment and others, become better stewards of the earth by understanding how human beings impact their environment in positive and negative ways, understand how we move people, goods, and ideas across the planet; and understand the various types of regions that exist in the world.
This unit will offer a broad perspective on the landscape of the continent, the climate, animals, natural resources, renewable resources, cultures, religions, and rise of some of the great civilizations. Through a research project, based on the spreading of religion along the Silk Road, your child will choose one religion to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for, and then share it with an audience through an oral presentation.
Due to the enormity of the continent, and the fact that Daily Wonder offers an exploration of India and the Middle East in Grade 5, and Russia as part of Europe in Grade 6, this unit will not focus on those regions. If your child did not receive the Grade 5 or 6 Daily Wonder curriculum, you may choose to incorporate more information on those areas into this unit.
