Welcome to Grade 1! What an exciting place to be!
You are at the beginning of the Grade School journey. Your child is experiencing a sense of oneness and unity with the world around them at this age. Grade 1 Homeschooling Curriculum: Numeracy and Literacy Skill Building
Grade 1 Units
Unit 1 - The Wonder of PatternsExplore shapes, patterns, and forms through engaging hands-on activities, imaginative pictures, and nature stories. Your child will develop a deep understanding of mathematical and scientific concepts while fostering creativity and joy through language and storytelling.
Patterns and forms are integral elements of our surroundings. They are ubiquitous in nature, while also defining the structure of the letters and numbers we use. By delving into the intricacies of patterns and forms, we also have the opportunity to focus on the 'form' of a child's posture, pencil grip, work quality, and habits, as well as the 'form' of home learning routines, schedules, and expectations for school time at home. To prepare to bring this unit, go out and get excited about the horizon! Look at what is around you, and notice the features of your landscape and the patterns and forms they create as they contrast with the sky. Imagine the line of the sun as it moves across the sky, and see the shape of the wave as it meets the sand and the shape of the trees as they meet the sky or reflect on the lake. This unit will focus on straight and curved lines, continuous lines, and patterns. Concepts like 3D, symmetry, and geometric forms will come at a later stage. The Wonder of Patterns unit offers a perfect balance of learning and fun, providing a gentle transition into the new school year. |
Unit 2 - The Wonder of Consonants 1Unlock the wonders of language and storytelling with the first Wonder of Consonants unit!
Using the living images presented through stories, well-chosen verses and poems, and engaging hands-on creative activities, your child will explore the shapes (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) of 10 consonants (B, S, M, D, T, F, V, G, L, K), laying the foundation for literacy in a fun and meaningful way. The English language has three layers: alphabetic code, pattern, and meaning. Learning to read begins with alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness. Working from the whole to the parts, you will bring the alphabet (whole) and the letters (parts). For example, you will bring the letter Mm through the living image of a misty mountain. You’ll do this by first bringing the image (story) and the phoneme (sound), then the grapheme (letter). This will be done over and over with new letters and working on a two-and-a-half-day rhythm. The Wonder of Consonants unit cultivates listening skills, vocabulary development, and expressive communication by immersing your child in a world of oral expression. Those who learn to speak expressively gain the ability to share their feelings with conviction. Literacy is the foundation for expression, including letter recognition, sound recognition, phonics rules, syllable rules, spelling rules, and grammar. This unit integrates social studies concepts with a focus on interconnectedness, building strong communities and respecting diversity. Every story, verse, and activity is carefully chosen to foster a deep appreciation and a sense of responsibility in your child to recognize their role within their community of learners. The Wonder of Consonants 1 unit empowers you to guide your child through a rich tapestry of language, literacy, and cultural exploration, igniting the spark of storytelling, creativity, and language discovery. |
Unit 3 - The Wonder of NumbersStep into the fascinating world of numbers and explore addition and subtraction through concrete, pictorial, and symbolic models. Your child will develop computational fluency through engaging activities and stories that ignite your child's curiosity and develop a deep understanding of the magic of numbers, patterns, and the natural world around us.
Most children in grade one already know how to count. But counting is only one element of numeracy. This unit will give you an opportunity to bring each number from 1 to 10 to your child in connection with what makes it up, where it is found in nature, how it is composed, how it can be decomposed, and where it belongs. Your child will learn to identify repeating elements in various contexts, including using Roman Numerals. You will tell stories, play games, and discover the magic, beauty, and significance of numbers in our everyday lives. |
Unit 4 - The Wonder of Consonants 2Unlock the wonders of language and storytelling with the second Wonder of Consonants unit!
Using the living images presented through stories, well-chosen verses and poems, and engaging hands-on creative activities, your child will explore the shapes (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) of the final 11 consonants (C, H, J, N, P, Q, R, W, X, Y, Z), laying the foundation for literacy in a fun and meaningful way. The English language has three layers: alphabetic code, pattern, and meaning. Learning to read begins with alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness. Working from the whole to the parts, you will bring the alphabet (whole) and the letters (parts). For example, you will bring the letter Cc through the living image of a of a crystal cave beneath a craggy crest.
