The Grade 2 curriculum offers story themes of the Heroes of our world, a path to aspire towards, and animal fables, which offer a spectrum of human characteristics from which your child can learn.

Grade 2 reading instruction is designed to lay a strong foundation in phonics, a crucial reading skill, while also emphasizing comprehension. This approach ensures that your child learns the rules for combining sound pictures to form words and practices using these rules to decode the written word. They will also be equipped to recognize words that do not conform to these rules, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the language. 

Proper punctuation becomes a necessary tool as your child continues to put their thoughts into writing. Our comprehensive grammar study in grade 2 reveals that there are different types of words: naming words (nouns), doing words (verbs), and describing words (adjectives and adverbs). This in-depth study ensures that your child develops a firm grasp of the language, enhancing their communication skills.

Math instruction in grade 2 is a natural progression from the foundational work in first grade. Your child will transition from relying heavily on external objects to count and calculate to engaging in more abstract mathematical operations. They will begin memorizing the times tables, learning about place value, and understanding the concepts of carrying and borrowing, significantly advancing their mathematical skills.

Unit 1 - The Wonder of Patterns

What are patterns and forms?  When you think about it, patterns exist in everything in nature, and forms make up all the letters and numbers we use today.  There is the straight line and the curved line and all the ways these two friends interact. By focusing deeply on the patterns and forms, you also get to focus on the 'form' of your child's posture, pencil grip, quality of work, and habits, and the 'form' of your home learning routines and rhythms and your expectations for school time in your home, such as where, when, and how.  

The Wonder of Patterns unit offers a perfect balance of learning and fun, providing a gentle transition into the new school year.​

Unit 2 - The Wonder of Place Value

Introducing an innovative approach to teaching mathematics and language arts to children! This immersive unit brings numbers to life through captivating stories, hands-on activities and interactive games, fostering a deeper understanding of place value up to 1,000,000.

Unit 4 - The Wonder of Math

This engaging unit will enhance students' understanding of addition and subtraction with numbers up to 1,000,000 while fostering computational fluency and comfort with place value. As part of the curriculum, students will embark on a captivating journey through a continuous story thread, which will progressively introduce concepts of carrying and borrowing, providing a solid foundation for working with larger numbers.

The Wonder of Math unit extends beyond mathematics, incorporating compelling connections to Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Students will explore fables from around the world, stories about the forest and the forestry industry, and insights into the interconnectedness of living plants in the forest ecosystem. During the final week, there is a project option centred around tree planting. Students who delve into this project will gain practical knowledge about forestry, reinforcing the theme of wood harvest that permeates the math curriculum.

Building on the foundational skills gained in the first language arts-focused unit, "The Wonder of Heroes," this unit offers a comprehensive approach to literacy inspired by "The Roadmap to Literacy." Unit 6 - The Wonder of Times Tables

This engaging and comprehensive unit takes students on an exciting journey into the world of numbers and storytelling.

"The Wonder of Times Tables" unit promises to inspire students as they delve into the beauty of numbers, developing a deep understanding of place value and comfort using the four processes. Students will strengthen their foundational math skills, deepen their computational fluency in working with addition and subtraction of numbers up to 1,000,000, and focus on times tables through skip counting. They will gain insight into the rhythm of events that shape individual, family, community, and country identities.

Each day, you will focus on a new times table and create a visual representation for each table. The living picture running through each day will come from stories of time and place. Time and place will allow for themes of connectedness and identity to emerge.  You will use the seasons to help you look at the rhythm of events that shape the identity of the individual, the family, the community, and the country.  With the stories of the seasons in the background, the times tables will reveal their own interconnectedness as your child discovers what tables share factors.

Unit 8 - The Wonder of Graphs

Graphs are incredibly valuable tools. In 'The Wonder of Graphs' unit, your objective is to demonstrate to your child the practicality of graphs, how to interpret them, and how to create them.

The duality of the seven/eight-year-old will find themselves reflected within the graphs of this unit. Your child will get some experience comparing and representing data in graph form, allowing them to see and experience that nothing is black and white; there is always a story of grey in the details. They will explore preferences as well as roles and responsibilities to uncover the interplay of such things and then find ways to express this in graphs. They will discover the dance of community and connection as they explore their family as well as the Fables. This wonderful interplay, the dance of life, will be illustrated in graphs and images.

What are the 'homes' of these critters like? How have the critters adapted to fit right into this place? What is the human impact on the lives of these critters? Your child will have opportunities to combine all their knowledge from their investigations to imagine a habitat they could offer the critters. This unit intertwines science, social studies, and language arts skills for investigations and math and collaborative skills in building. 

From constructing bird or bug houses to crafting nature-inspired stories, this unit fosters essential skills while nurturing a deep understanding of interconnectedness, reciprocity, and a sense of place.
