Your child will be entering a critical phase in their development around the 9th year of age, marking the transition from the unity and oneness experienced in early childhood to the development of an inner world separate from family, friends and beyond. Each child experiences this differently. However, common experiences can be anger, fear, feeling misunderstood or alone, and awareness of mortality. Grade 3 themes focus on practical skills and practical arts. When your child can cook, build a shelter, and make simple garments, a feeling of self-sufficiency helps develop their confidence. Story themes focus on tribal cultures that lost their home, had to wander alone for some time, and eventually found their way through a connection to their inner knowing.

Unit 1 - The Wonder of Beginnings

The "Wonder of Beginnings" unit is designed to guide students on a journey of self-discovery and connection through captivating creation stories from local Indigenous cultures and global traditions. It aims to provide a meaningful foundation for 8 and 9-year-olds, seamlessly weaving together core subjects while fostering a deep understanding of interconnectedness and responsibility in the world. It includes delving into archetypal callings, honing measurement skills in math, expanding diverse narratives in literacy, and embracing Indigenous perspectives in social studies.

The Wonder of Beginnings will instill in young learners a deep sense of empathy, connection, and understanding, which is the core goal and impact of our educational approach. 

Unit 2 - The Wonder of Fibers

"The Wonder of Fibers" is an immersive educational unit that explores the world of natural fibers through stories and hands-on activities. It covers the history and cultural significance of textiles, drawing on creation stories and Indigenous knowledge. Students learn about the properties of various fibers like wool, cotton, and silk, and their environmental impacts. The unit also integrates science, social studies, and language arts, helping children understand the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the cultural importance of clothing.

Unit 3 - The Wonder of Shelters

​The Wonder of Shelters" unit offers an exciting exploration of human history and culture by examining shelters from ancient to modern times. Through stories and hands-on activities, students learn how shelters reflect the needs, resources, and creativity of diverse communities. The curriculum strengthens literacy skills with fun games and integrates science, social studies, and math. By creating dioramas and engaging in storytelling, children develop creativity, critical thinking, and multicultural awareness, making learning both comprehensive and enjoyable.

Unit 4 - The Wonder of Linear Measurement

​"The Wonder of Measurement" unit takes students on a journey through the history and evolution of measurement, exploring its origins and significance. Through stories, hands-on activities, and projects, students learn about linear measurement, create their own ruler, and even build a shelf. This unit fosters a deep understanding of measurement's role in daily life while enhancing math, reading, and writing skills. It also offers insights into diverse cultures and the historical importance of measurement.

Unit 5 - The Wonder of Expression

​"The Wonder of Expression" unit, inspired by Janet Langley and Jennifer Militzer-Kopperl's "The Roadmap to Literacy," helps students master self-expression and language through poetry, stories, and interactive games. Focusing on the Alphabetic, Pattern, and Meaning layers of English, the unit introduces 33 phonics rules, four sentence types, and key punctuation skills. It nurtures a deep understanding of language in a creative, engaging way, laying strong foundations in reading, spelling, and writing.

Unit 6 - The Wonder of Mass & Capacity

​The comprehensive unit "The Wonder of Mass & Capacity" provides an immersive learning experience for children to explore practical math experiences related to mass and capacity. It covers topics such as scale building, estimation, Imperial and Metric systems, and the history of measurement. One of the highlights is a culminating project called Flex Week, where students can prepare a menu and present a feast independently using the measurement skills they've learned. The unit aims to develop computational fluency, identify patterns, and build a strong foundation in math while fostering a love for learning.

Unit 7 - The Wonder of Farming

​The Wonder of Farming unit offers a captivating educational journey into the intricacies of farm life, covering topics such as soil, compost, animal husbandry, and the interconnectedness of water, sun, and plants. It encourages hands-on learning with field trip suggestions and aims to foster an understanding of the farm ecosystem, promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable food systems while inspiring students to recognize farming's impact on our lives and communities.

Unit 8 - The Wonder of Time

In The Wonder of Time unit, students will delve into the enchanting rhythms of nature and learn to appreciate the beauty of the Farmer's Almanac. From exploring the yearly cycle to measuring the passage of time in hours, minutes, and seconds, this unit offers a unique and engaging learning experience.

Through a combination of hands-on activities and critical thinking exercises, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of time, seasons, fractions, and the rich tapestry of celebrations and traditions. The unit seamlessly integrates math and language arts, uncovering the threads that connect us to our families, communities, and the world, enhancing their comprehension of the rhythms that govern our lives.

Unit 9 - The Wonder of Time

This comprehensive unit offers a thorough exploration of the nine parts of speech, empowering students to become adept at self-expression. Through engaging activities and interactive lessons, students will delve into sentence structure in a way that is both fun and engaging. Poetry and games will be the vehicle for exploration. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a variety of poetic works, exploring parts of speech and even creating their own verses. This unit emphasizes the importance of using language to connect with others and express oneself effectively. By the end of the unit, students will also master the final three phonics rules (the shwa, the ending grid, and the six syllable types), rounding out their grade 3 literacy skills.

Unit 10 - The Wonder of Money

Throughout this unit, students will embark on an enlightening journey through the history of assigning value, exploring indigenous cultures, and discovering the evolution of money from its humble origins to its modern-day significance. They will come to understand the interconnectedness of all things, gain insight into diverse aspects of cultures and societies that shape our understanding of worth, learn about currency and fractions, learn how to identify patterns in monetary costs and gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of economy and politics. With practical activities and real-life experiences, students will apply their knowledge in creating and managing their own sale event, be it a garage sale, bake sale, or lemonade stand, bringing their learning about value and money to life.
